Australian National B-Grade Brass Band Champions
29-30 March 2002
2002 will be a year remembered fondly for the band. Over Easter, Hall Village won the "B" Grade National Brass Band Championships held in Geelong, Victoria. The HVBB performed "Paganini Variations" by Philip Wilby as its own choice, in what was described by adjudicator Ken McDonald as a remarkable performance, awarding the band the winning score of 196 out of 200.

This was followed by the on stage march "Mercury" for which the band was given a score or 46 out of 50, also taking Hall Village to a win in the stage march section. Combining these scores with the band's solid performance of both the Hymn and the Test Piece, the band took out their first national B-Grade championship.
Bob Barnard becomes HVBB's first Patron
6 May 2003
Bob Barnard, a living legend of Australian Jazz and one of the finest mainstream-jazz cornetists in the world, has taken the position of Patron in a small gathering at ScreenSound Australia (the National Film and Sound Archive) in Canberra on March 6th.

Best known as a jazz musician, Bob Barnard, like Louis Armstrong before him, received his early training in a Brass Band.  He began cornet lessons at the age

Although widely regarded as one of the finest living classic jazz cornetists, he does not regard himself as a trad or old-fashioned player, rather he sees himself as continuing to develop a style that began with Louis Armstrong, and has evolved with players such as Bunny Berigan, Bobby Hackett, Ruby Braff, and Warren Vaché.
of 11 and played with the Chelsea City Brass Band and the Mordialloc Brass Band before launching his jazz-recording career at the age of 16. Jazz itself owes much to the strong tradition of brass banding that existed in New Orleans in  the late nineteenth century.  Bob's patronage of the Hall Village Brass Band not only acknowledges his personal origins, but also the strong links that have always existed between Brass Bands and jazz.
The band is delighted to have someone of Bob's standing within the Australian musical scene as its first Patron and is looking forward to a long relationship with Bob and his wife, Danielle.
Exciting news for everyone who appreciates the value of beauty in their lives!  The world-ranked Hall Village Brass Band will be joined by internationally-famed soprano soloist Louise Page for an exciting evening of beautiful music on Thursday, November 22nd at Canberra Girls Grammar School Hall commencing at 7:30 pm.  The concert, “Beauty and the Brass”, will include music of many genres, with each piece chosen to explore an aspect of beauty (as well as some of its consequences!).

Two major works will be Edward Gregson’s suite for Brass Band “Dances and Arias”, and the Australian premiere of Philip Wilby’s “Unholy Sonnets”, a setting for Soprano Soloist and Brass Band of poems by Michael Jarman.
